Sasha's First Birthday

Once Sasha got up this morning, she got to help Mommy a little in the kitchen. I made French Toast and Scrambled Eggs. Daddy made Sausage. Sasha started with an appetizer of cantaloupe, which she also rubbed on her toes! lol She actually got a glass plate for her own breakfast! She did pretty well with the plate until she was done eating. Daddy gave Sasha her Elmo toy gift from him. She liked it very much and carried it around for a while and several times later in the day as well.
I thought Sasha was ready for a nap after that, but she didn't take her "morning nap" until 1 o'clock. I was making her cupcakes when she went down. I also gave her the Baby Doll gift from me. We wound up with 30 cupcakes! I iced most of them while she was sleeping, but left a couple plain. I also got a shower while she slept. Then she woke up and I took her in for a shower. We had fun playing with the water. Then I let her eat part of a plain cupcake in my lap before getting ready to leave.
We left and stopped at the Apartment Office for some paperwork I needed. Sasha enjoyed the walk to the office and back to the car, though she got distracted by a landscaper with a leaf-blower. After having Daddy bring the camera out to the car, we headed to Gran's house. There we visited with Gran, Serena, and Uncle Keith. Sasha walked all over the place and chased the pets a little bit. She shared Serena's cupcake. From her Uncle Keith, she received a Finding Nemo book that has this cook cylinder attached to it. It is filled with little beads in different shades of blue plus little cardboard cutouts of characters from the story. You can spin it to find them as you read. The cylinder also pops off the book so you can shake it. Sasha really like it! She also got a "First 1000 Words" book and a little TY Birthday Grimace that is very cute. She liked it, too. The books are paper, so we'll have to keep them out of reach and just bring them out to read them to her. From Gran & Nena, Sasha received a tabbed DK My First Animals board book that lists the names and sounds of lots of animals! It is a very nice board book!
We rushed home to gather more cupcakes and Sasha's travel high chair and Daddy. Then we headed to Grandma & Grandpa's house. We ate reheated NY Style Pizza. Then Sasha was given a full size Hershey bar. Thats right, the full sized bar. When it came down to it, I wasn't ready to pack up and walk out. It was all we could do to get Sasha out of her dress before my dad had it in her hands. At first she wouldn't eat it at all. She didn't know it was food. I broke it into smaller pieces and handed her a fourth of it - then she tried a bite. Grandma & Grandpa both kept putting it in her mouth... which bothered me a bit. I usually hold stuff up and let Sasha take it with her hand or her mouth, but it is her choice. But I'm also slightly psychotic. She handed a piece to Elmo and a piece to me. We ate them. (Ha! That minimized the chocolate a little.) She dropped a fourth of the bar and I took a couple more pieced from her. She liked the chocolate, but she didn't seem to go nuts for it like Serena & Tyler did.
Grandma brought in a candle and a lighter, so we put one into a cupcake, lit it, and sang Happy Birthday. I was glad we did that because I felt we were lacking this tradition. Even Dad sang. Sasha like it when everyone sang. I blew the candle out for her and unwrapped the cupcake. She still had chocolate left, but was mostly distracted by the cupcake. Then she started making faces like she had something sour in her mouth. Perhaps the icing was too sweet or something? We don't really know. It wasn't long, though, before she decided she was finished. Oh, and she didn't like the chocolate or the chocolate icing getting all on her hands. She gets food on her hands all the time, but I guess this was a lot thicker than anything else. Usually it is solid pieces or sauce of some sort.
Cleaning her was quite a task for Mommy & Daddy! Then Sasha sat with Grandpa to open her presents. From Grandma & Grandpa she got a card that plays a song when you open it. Grandma showed her a few times, then Sasha was all over it! Then she got a two-pack of socks and a shirt / pant outfit. She also got an Itsy Bitsy Spider board book... but it has glitter on the cover. I was concerned, but now I've tested it and I think the glitter is pretty secure. (I hate glitter and don't want it to wind up in her eyes.) Grandma opened another card for her, from Sasha's cousins (my sister and her kids). Grandma was hilarious as she said that the card didn't say anything and put it back in the envelope. I'll read them later, but we'll likely keep the noisy card for a while for Sasha to play with it. From my sister and her family, Sasha got an Elmo Cell Phone toy that was very loud in the box, but gets quieter when it is taken out of the box (for the safety of the child, so the box states). The phone is very cute and Sasha likes it very much! She also received a little hoodie that matched the pants from the other outfit.
We stayed and visited for a little bit, until I was sick of chasing Sasha. It is so much easier to hang out at home where her environment is mostly child-friendly already. I don't have to worry so much about what she might get into so I don't have to chase her.
Sasha had been tired since before we left Gran's place, but hadn't slept at all. When we got home, she nursed to sleep and is still down. I think I'll take her to bed shortly. She woke, but nursed back to sleep so I think she could be down for the night if I play my cards right!
Ironically, the board book from my mom came from Sam's and still had the price sticker on it (Sasha doesn't care). Keith called her on it. The board book from my stepmother also came from Sam's and still had the price sticker on it. Dad called her on it. Slightly surreal, eh?
I am very pleased with the gifts Sasha received! Only one noisy thing, plenty of books, some useful clothes... good choices. I would still love to have a wagon, but consider it a luxury. I would also like Sasha to have some sort of comfy chair her size. At Dad's today she sat on a tiny plastic chair that Dad has had there since Serena was Sasha's size! Sasha really liked it. I had been thinking of a bean bag, but now I think maybe something that is more obviously a seat.
Sasha has another gift she will receive sometime this weekend from Veronica. Elmo and I chose not to wrap her gifts at all. The gifts at Dad's place were in gift bags, as was the gift from Uncle Keith. So the only wrapped gift she got today was from Gran & Nena and wrapped in the Sunday Comics. (I love that wrapping paper!) She did a great job unwrapping her present!
Overall, a good low-key birthday.
