Kiwi - TMI

I got cucumbers and cantaloupe sliced last night for Sasha and I. She hasn't had melon lately and it is a favorite! I gave her one little nibble. After dinner I gave her kiwi for the first time. She really dug in and enjoyed it. It was a bit soft, but she just kind of mushed it into her mouth. I let her eat what she wanted and plenty landed in her lap. However, it seems to have burned right through her and is the first food to have a possibly ill effect.

She has been gassy this evening, a sure sign of an impending BM. Then she did her usual slight straining and stinking up the place. :-) I got her clean and changed. Her BM was fairly firm as they have been about half the time lately. A little while later she was stinking again. This time she had a BM that was quite watery with minimal substance at all. It was pretty much water... and kiwi seeds. She didn't get rashy or seem uncomfortable or anything, but then I don't leave her dirty for very long at all.

Anyway, I just wanted a note of that. If it offended your delicate sensibilities then you should have stopped at "TMI."

She had some cantaloupe this evening and was very happy about it!

We miss our condo, we really do. It was great to be close to family, we could drop everything and take a walk anytime or share extra food when we cooked too much. It was great to have a garage. The kitchen had SO much storage! The neighborhood was pretty and quiet.

However... we moved there while I was pregnant. Sasha was already toddling when we moved into our new apartment. This made it much easier to plan around her developmental level when we unpacked. I did more unpacking and rearranging last weekend and I've been quite happy with our arrangements. We have a full L-pit couch with an ottoman that serves as the gate when we want to lock her into the living room with us. Otherwise, she can have pretty much free-run of the apartment. The bathroom and bedroom doors stay closed. The 3 lower cabinets have been made Sasha-friendly (a term I prefer vs "baby proof"). One has a few pans and a colander. The next now has an open cardboard box full of colorful plastic bowls with lids on them. The next cabinet had to be emptied when I found she'd gotten the paper towels out and unrolled them this evening!

Then there is the pantry. It is in the dining room, across from the kitchen, so our giant desk / table separates it from the kitchen. The less-used foodstuffs and appliances are stored there. This weekend I put a cardboard box of toys in the bottom. There are some plastic things and lunch / bottle bags on the bottom shelf. The door stays open and it is right next to where I sit at my computer. Sasha loves to play in there!

We do still have a few problem areas, but overall I am very happy with the arrangement here.

She has figured out how to climb on the couch now, when the boppy is next to it. I imagine it won't be long before she is climbing over the back of the couch. Then we'll be in trouble! But then we've said that about each developmental milestone, travel-wise. I'm sure we'll manage just fine. She is tall enough now she can reach up and take stuff off of the table!

Oh! I had also planned and love that her high chair now sits AT the table and we can sit at the table to eat meals together. I don't use her tray, she just uses the table with me. We had veggies for dinner tonight. She doesn't like green beans as much as sugar snap peas.

Sasha is certainly in that phase where everything goes in her mouth. Sometimes she finds loose threads at edges of the carpet and picks them up... you just never know what she will find. I was recently on my way out to work and saw Sasha pick something up from the edge of the tile / carpet by the front door. It was headed to her mouth. I grabbed it from her hand just as she reached her mouth. And then... it moved! OMG, it was a live bug!

I love spiders and will even hold huge hairy spiders, but I don't much care for holding most bugs. I freaked! I screamed and threw it down... and then stomped it into the door. I made Elmo come get it. I usually make him kill or catch / release any bugs in our home, but that thing HAD to go, post haste!

I was SO grossed out and my heart was POUNDING! Just... EW!

So... Wednesday. My first day back to work... after my long weekend... after moving my office to the other end of the building... after giving up my cane. I had to walk back and forth a few times because there was no tugger available. It was making for a long, sore day. I also worked at VSA (gatekeeper of sorts) most of the evening and did more walking and standing around. I hadn't realized how much I tend to lean my knees on the tugger carts, but trust me - not comfortable on my stitches. I finally got out of there at 8 o'clock.

  • Run 2-part errand.
  • Pick up dinner.
  • Get home and eat with my family.

At 9:15 or so, I took Sasha and headed out into the rain to meet my mother at Wally World where I walked some more. The rain got worse. Mom was so helpful, holding Sasha while I unloaded the grocery cart and while I loaded groceries into the car in the rain. Sasha & I left the store at about 11:15. We waited for Mom to meet us at the apartment before I unloaded in more rain. She held Sasha while I unloaded the car in more rain, trudging through the river in the yard. She also held her while I parked my car about half a block away and walked (in more rain) back to her van.

Next time we need groceries and it is raining... we'll make do. Forget that shit.

Oh yeah, and right before we left home, Elmo pointed out that Sasha hadn't slept much. So while she has been keeping me up past midnight every night, last night might have been the night I could get her shifted back to an earlier schedule. We didn't wind up crawling into bed at 1 o'clock. My knee was so worn out by then!!

Sasha got a really runny nose the other day. She had trouble sleeping so I wound up moving to the couch where I could hold her in a more upright position. It was a rough night. The next night we slept on the couch again, but she did better so we moved back to the bedroom early in the morning. We're kind of hoping its allergies or even teething, but I'm not so sure.

I've been feeling a little rough myself and felt feverish at work tonight, too. Ugh.

Meanwhile, Sasha seems to be focusing on her vocal skills lately. She yells and talks a lot.

She knows what her "belly" is. Developmentally, we're encouraged to tell her the names of things around us. She likes the Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes song, but then... she just loves it when you sing.

She is drooling an awful lot tonight. I don't really think it is so much teething, though, as just difficulty breathing so her mouth is staying open.

We arrived at the hospital at 9:45 for check-in. I preregistered yesterday. I gave my checks and we were taken to the Surgery Waiting room. We were immediately taken back out to my little cubicle. I had to pee in a cup (I'm not pregnant) and change into a cool paper gown called Bair Paws. It was soft on the outside, purple, marked with a bear paw, and part of a heating system that you could hook directly into your gown. It had a vent system inside and you could adjust the temperature blowing into your gown. I didn't actually use it, but I thought the system was awesome!

Then... we waited! The Anesthesiologist came in. I liked him and he said that I wouldn't actually have to pump-and-dump with general anesthesia. The problems I had before weren't actually general. They were drugs given intravenously. That was good news! My surgery was supposed to be at 11:45. The Doc came to see me right around then and said that he had a shoulder to do before me. He had another shoulder that was scheduled ahead of me, but he was going to do me next because my surgery was going to be much shorter. The shoulders take about 45 minutes. So he said I'd be in by 1:00 at the latest. I asked him about the possibility of lateral release of the ligament pulling on my knee cap. He said he would take a look and that if he did that there would be more swelling, bleeding, a brace, and longer healing. But he'd see if I was a candidate for that. I guess that shoulder was nastier than he expected. I didn't get taken back until about 3:00!! That is over 3 hours late! OMG, I was starving! I was getting cranky and also wanted to cry. Sasha finally fell asleep at about 2:30 though.

Surgery seemed to go fine (no lateral release of the ligament) and I did alright waking up from anesthesia. The staff was nice. The took me back to my cubicle and brought Elmo & Sasha back to me. I was able to hold her right away, but had to have him nearby because I was still a bit woozy. Courtney had some trouble finding me at the hospital but since it started so late, she agreed to come drive me home. Yay!

Courtney and I stopped at Drug Warehouse. I actually felt up to going in with her, but my crutches were at home and all the wheel chairs got stolen earlier in the day! Courtney got my scrips and some other drugs I needed. I just love that girl! Then we stopped at Whataburger so I could order lunch for Elmo, Tyler and myself. My dad and his wife were already on their way to drop her off. I guess they called Elmo about it because they hadn't called me! I arrived home about the same time everyone else got there. Brandon was even there! Joua even came by (to get Courtney to go somewhere)!

I was tired, but couldn't seem to sleep. Sasha napped in my lap for a bit. I'm hoping I can manage to get into the bed with her soon.

I used the crutches to get from the car to the house, but have otherwise been able to use the cane my dad loaned me. I am even walking around a bit with no assistance! I haven't felt the need to take anything for pain - I am SO pleased! At most, I have some discomfort. When I'm not moving it really doesn't hurt at all, especially when I'm using the ice thing on it.

EDIT: My throat hurts worse than anything. Ugh. And I've been pigging all day! I had a Whatacheeseburger, chocolate milk (of course!), a piece of sushi and some other leftovers from Courtney, and I ate a pop tart with milk.

I had to get up earlier than usual for my 8:10 appointment this morning. Plus I took Sasha along with no help. We checked in and filled out all the paperwork. I forgot about all that junk you have to do when you go to a new medical office. Then we waited... Jerrod (Dr Palomino's Assistant) finally came and got us. He was smitten by Sasha and has a little girl of his own. He has scrubbed for my other Orthopaedic Surgeon before and was relieved to hear I hadn't had surgery yet. They were able to access my MRI (I gave them the report), but had to take fresh x-rays. Oh crap! I hadn't thought of that. Jerrod held Sasha and gave her a hunk of bagel while I got them done. This girl was so fast! The one downstairs there had been slow and creepy, but it was no big deal at all today. Plus I didn't have to change into a gown!

Finally Dr. Palomino came in to see me. I really liked him. He didn't talk down to me and was open to my concerns. We discussed Surgical Tourniquet and he even offered a third choice. However, he explained that the concern is that the option that aren't general anesthesia don't numb you completely and the risk is that you might wiggle or jerk while he has tiny sharp instruments inside the knee. I hadn't looked at it that way. He wrote my surgery request to be general (at my agreement), but added "or choice." He is also going to just start with a steroid shot in my left knee. I hope it helps, but he said that would qualify me for a different treatment further down the road if that doesn't help.

He does surgery at SouthCrest (my preferred hospital) every other Friday, but he is taking the next Friday (in two weeks) off, so he said we could do the surgery tomorrow or in a month. Tomorrow?! Seriously?! So I went for it.

On my way out of the building, I ran into my doctor's PA. She recognized us and asked how Sasha was doing (since she saw us for her ears recently). She was very nice and discussed the pump-and-dump timing with me. Since I'll be under for a very short time, it shouldn't be bad. I'd still like to know what they'll use so I can research it before I go. I plan to call them in the morning.

Then I had to leave work early to go to my PreOp appointment. That took longer than I expected so I wasn't able to pick Tyler up from school. Then I picked up a late lunch and brought it home for a few minutes of down time with my family. I took Sasha and headed out North (Talala / Collinsville) for Goat Milk for Sasha while I have to pump-and-dump. Though the PreOp guy seems to think I won't have to do that. I brought Mom some dairy stuff from there, too. Then I had to go pick Tyler up from Dad's place where she had been attending a birthday party for her cousin. I drove her home and finally got home after 7!

My less-than-half-day of work got eaten up right-quick!

I have to be at the hospital at 9:45 and am having surgery at 11:45. Boy those first two hours will surely drag... especially since I'll be starving! Oh, Sasha doesn't like the Goat Milk. She just spits it back out. Hopefully we won't even need it.

I'm excited and nervous about surgery. I'm excited because hopefully I'll see drastic improvement (once I get over the surgery itself), but I'm nervous because I'm going under. I don't like going under anesthesia. Sigh.

EDIT: I forgot to pick up my vitamins today.
    msjorje: (Default)
We recently let Sasha try bacon. And last night she enjoyed peach yogurt. I also got some Organic Puffs - Greens for her. She likes them! They are crispy enough for her to crunch them, but they melt instantly when they get wet. They are so disgusting if they aren't in her mouth! It isn't like I have to trick her into eating vegetables, but still... I'm glad to have another healthy snack around. Mom got her some organic teething biscuits and she loves them, too!
    msjorje: (sasha)
She has started dropping toys into the PlayPen. She doesn't actually go IN the playpen much at all. It currently serves to keep her out of the fireplace. Then today she has started handing me toys, then holding her hand out for me to hand them all back to her. I couldn't believe how many toys were actually strewn all over the living room when I got home from work!

Also... I've been wondering if I'll stop using the "baby" tag and switch to "kids" once she turns one year old.
    msjorje: (sasha)
I've decided I want Sasha (and us) to have a wagon. I think it would be great to have for zoo trips as well as walking to the laundromat! I had no idea they came with seat-belts these days! Here are the ones I have picked out that I like so far:

Radio Flyer Pathfinder Wagon or Step2 Wagon for Two Plus - There are some fancier Radio Flyer ones with canopies and stuff, but either of these more basic ones would be great! They also make ones with less features, but these two are awesome.

This is kind of a continuation on this post.
    msjorje: (sasha)
Sasha loves Sugar Snap Peas. She also does well with roasted red pepper. She got all the meat off of a piece tonight and then spit out the skin. I was impressed.

She loves to run back and forth on the couch and rough house with Momma. Here lately, she'll settle down to sleep and I'll take her to bed. About half an hour later, she'll wake up. :-\

Using the potty has been a little bit of an issue since the move. Partially I feel we haven't found our rhythm yet. Also, the rooms are new and exciting, so she doesn't want to stay on the potty. She is starting to stay on the potty in the Master Bath now, but the Guest Bath is still too exciting. Our new toilets aren't elongated bowls, so she can reach the back where the seat connects when I hold her over the seat. I don't like that.

Sasha has recently had her first "play date." Our friend Brandon brought his girls over. I guess they are about 1½ and...3? 2½? I'm not sure, but the younger one is the devil. She has tried to bite Sasha's ear. Elmo keeps an eye on her when she's here, but so far they've only been here 2-3 times.

She still cries when I leave for work. Sometimes are worse than others. Sometimes she just kind of fusses. After lunch today, Daddy was holding her and she had this awful look on her face as she bawled and I went out the door. She calms down quickly, but it breaks my heart to leave! When it is bad, I walk to the car feeling as though I could vomit. That makes me feel like I should be doing something different, but most of the time it isn't that bad.

Sasha gives lots of kisses these days! Once we get her started, she wants to take turns kissing Daddy, then Mommy, over and over again. She kisses Daddy more, but he is the one that got her started on this. She also calls everything "Da-da" or "Da-dee" lately.

This place is better child-proofed than the last place, so I often like to give her free run of the apartment and I just follow her around to keep her out of trouble. Electrical outlet covers are on the shopping list. Otherwise, the table is my main concern. We may have to get plastic bumpers for the edges.

I am still trying to get consistent with some signs. I really want to do it, I'm just not doing very well.

    Birthdays

Both my girls have birthdays next month (a couple days apart). When Tyler had her 1st Birthday, I took her for lunch at my mom's. We also took her to Joe's mom's to celebrate that evening. Then we had a huge party for Joe's dad's side of the family and my dad's side of the family, plus his mom I think. I am just not "feeling it" for Sasha. I mean... I don't feel the need for such a huge event and she doesn't have as much local family anyway. I went whole hog with Teletubbies invites, etc. Do I want to go with a theme at all for Sasha? Do we want to do dinner out and have family / friends meet us? Or a picnic? I just do NOT know what I want to do!

Then Tyler... she usually has a big picnic because her dad's family is pretty big. I was involved that first year after I split, but since then I haven't been involved at all. So what shall I do with our family, especially considering that my dad won't attend if my mom is there. Ugh! I'm sure Tyler would be cool with a nice dinner out that her friends could also attend, but I just don't know. My nieces and nephews usually have a dinner / cake / present thing at my dad's place.

I know 1st Birthday is a big deal... she won't remember it, but she'll view pics of it for years to come... I just am at a loss. What is wrong with me?

Sasha has a favorite movie. She loves Little Shop of Horrors! Thankfully, so do Mommy and Daddy but I'd like to find some other options to have on for background noise.

    Teeth

Tooth #4 has emerged! Sasha is very fussy today.
    msjorje: (mommy)
Tyler and Sasha will both have birthdays next month! So... for reference, here are some of the things that interest them (read: gift ideas)

Tyler is turning 12 and is now very interested in vampire books (including Twilight stuff). She likes goth fashion, though she is not at all dark (emotionally speaking). So black / goth clothing / accessories are a great idea. Vampire books and/or books where the heroine is a young girl are also a big hit. She likes dark books and dark movies. She is always thrilled with gift cards to book stores, though clothing stores would also rock. She also loves Repo! The Genetic Opera right now. She has a twin bed plus trundle at my place and would probably like some updated (age-wise) bedding since her Spongebob set. I think she pretty much loves everything with a preteen target audience.

Sasha will be celebrating her first birthday. With little ones, I stand by my statement that any toy with their age in the age range is great and will be loved. Specifically, though, Sasha loves [board] books with buttons that make noise. I prefer toys with some educational value. I plan to pick out Sasha's first baby doll, probably a truck or other stereotypically boy gift, and probably a change bank of some sort. These are just sort of things that I feel she should have at her first birthday. I felt the same with Tyler and she still loves her first baby doll. Any clothing should definitely be 12 months, at a minimum. She weighs over 22 pounds now. As far as character toys, we prefer Elmo stuff, of course. We prefer nothing terribly large since we just downsized our home, though the Elmo couch and chair are both adorable! A toddler bed would be a great item to have! She doesn't have a bed of her own yet.

Perhaps we'll put together wish lists this weekend...

    8/22 EDIT: More here.
    msjorje: (sasha)
During the days leading up to the move, we noticed that Sasha was falling more often. We even said she seemed a little drunk. I wasn't sure why she was doing it, but I wasn't worried. I just filed away the information for reference in case something else happened to go with it.

Saturday morning of the move, Sasha was needy. I figured it was all the turmoil of the move. I had to hold her pretty much all day, besides just keeping her from underfoot. Thankfully, I was able to hand her off to friends occasionally and do little tasks myself. Mostly I just directed.

This week, Sasha has become increasingly needy and has even been poking at an ear. That's it, she has an ear infection. I have called our doctor and gotten an appointment for Sasha to see the Physician's Assistant on Friday. I also sent Elmo and Brandon (with Sasha in tow) to the Health Food Store for garlic oil for Sasha's poor ear. I was not aware, however, that there is a garlic oil for cooking. Oops. I got home at 8:30. Ten minutes later, I scooped up the baby and we raced across town back to Akin's. Sasha bawled for almost the entire trip. I thought at first that the car made it worse, but it later occurred to me that she just didn't want to be alone. She has been needy and didn't want to be back there by herself. Poor dear.

We arrived at the store with moments to spare. Colleen was *very* helpful with find us some ear drops specifically for children. Should Sasha wind up on antibiotics, she suggested we come back for probiotics afterward. She also highly recommended a berry product... I don't remember what, but I have brochure in the car. Sasha was a DOLL at the store! She cried as I put her back into the car seat, even though we were at the store for a good 10 minutes (at least). She reached for me as I shut the door. :-(

We raced back home and she dozed off a couple of times from crying. I hadn't even fed her yet! She was fine in my arms as I got the cup of hot water ready and got all set to settle in for nursing and ear-treating. She noticed when I put the liquid in her ear, but moments later didn't seem to care any more. They are supposed to be soothing, so hopefully they were. She was soon happily gnawing on pizza crust in my lap. She smelled all good and garlic-y, I wanted to eat her! :-)

Hopefully she'll rest a bit better tonight. I'll treat her again in the morning. Then my dad is meeting us at Physical Therapy to wrangle her during my appointment. He doesn't babysit babies still in diapers but was willing to come along to help. Elmo will be visiting Samantha, so he won't be home.

Thankfully, tomorrow is my half-day at work. I'll get to see Tyler and she'll be here to help with errands and/or Sasha. Sasha will be SO excited to see her after we didn't see her last Thursday!
    msjorje: (sasha)
Tonight Sasha tried YoBaby 3-in-1 meals yogurt + fruit + veggies. It is full fat yogurt with apple and sweet potato puree in it. She liked it, but she kept biting the spoon. I want to let her feed herself, but I find lately I rarely have the patience to let her have yogurt on her own. Hopefully that will change as we settle into the new place.

Meanwhile, Daddy has been packing a lot of stuff around the house. Today he got the rest of the low shelves of DVDs packed. This meant he could move the playpen (which doubles as a gate) and allow more play area for Sasha. Eventually she even got into the bottom shelves. She can't figure out how to get out, though, so she gets upset. They are a slight step up from the floor.

Our carpet is damaged by the previous resident's pet urine. The owner was not aware and it is one of the reasons we have chosen to move. Sasha usually has a quilt for a floor in her play area. Since she has more space, I've pulled up the quilt. It wasn't covering the entire area anyway. However, I like to nibble Sasha's toes... and I notice they now smell like dog piss. Ugh. So disgusting. Thankfully she very rarely eats her own toes, but she does put her hands on the floor as well. We're moving on Saturday. I look forward to have a downstairs-only home with hopefully nice flooring. I'm hoping they don't put new carpet in because that is bad for babies, too.

Sasha tried asparagus last weekend. Just regular canned, slimy asparagus. She liked it, as do I!

Today she has cut her other top tooth, so that makes 3 so far.

Also today, she is walking around a lot. It seems like she is going to take off running any second, but then she gets ahead of herself and falls.
    msjorje: (Default)
Sasha and I had a steamable vegetable medley for dinner this evening. She tried Water Chestnuts and seemed to like them. I love them! She bit them just fine, but I don't think she swallowed any.

For dessert, I had the new Chips Ahoy with Reese's. They don't even have them on their site! They didn't live up to my expectations. I think I've only seen 1 commercial, but I immediately put them on the shopping list. Eh, nothin' special. I think I prefer original Chips Ahoy over them.
    msjorje: (pregnancy)
The more I think about trying for another child (trying for a boy), the more I itch to be pregnant again. It is a little too soon yet, but it has been on my mind a lot lately. So... I've dug out my old chart files and requested the Natural Family Planning book as well as the Choose the Sex book from the library. So, I'll begin the research again so I'll be ready when we're really ready. I've always thought it would be novel to get pregnant on purpose. heh

I've also been thinking about gardening. Once we get moved to our new place next month, I'd like to set up some planters (lined milk crates) and try my hand at a couple of vegetables. I have several gardening books requested from the library, especially on the topics of container gardening and square foot gardening.
